A lasting finish starts with what’s under it. Mike Cohen, private label product manager at LKQ, introduces two primers in the FinishMaster by LKQ lineup. One is a versatile epoxy primer sealer and the other is a low-VOC direct-to-metal primer surfacer.
FMB850-G 2K Epoxy Primer Sealer
FMB850-G is a 4.7 VOC, National Rule 2K epoxy that works as either a primer or a sealer.
- As a primer: Mix 2:1 with FMB860 Catalyst.
- As a sealer: Add up to 25% reducer.
- Application: 1–2 single wet coats, with a 10–15 minute flash between coats.
- Topcoat window: As a sealer, you can topcoat 30 minutes to 24 hours after application without sanding. After 24 hours, you’ll need to sand before topcoating.
It goes over any properly prepared metal or plastic, and it can be topcoated with any finish, including acrylic lacquer.
FMB8884-G 2.1 VOC DTM Primer Surfacer
For VOC-restricted markets, FMB8884-G is a 2.1 low-VOC primer surfacer that goes direct to metal.
- Mix: 4:1 with FMB8885 Activator, reduced 5–10% if needed.
- Application: 2–3 wet coats, with a 10–15 minute flash between coats.
- Dry to sand: 2–3 hours after the last coat.
It’s isocyanate-free and resists corrosion well, so you can skip the separate pretreatment primer step. It also sands easily and levels well.
